What is a MAC address?

A MAC (Media Access Control) address is a unique identifier, similar to a serial number. Each network adapter in a device has a different MAC address. A MAC address is known by several names, including

Wi-Fi address hardware address adapter address
physical address Ethernet address LAN address

A MAC address consists of 6 pairs of characters, usually separated by a colon, dash or space. A character may have the value 0 to 9 or A to F (case does not matter). Do not confuse a zero with an O “oh” (not a valid character) or an 8 with a B (bee, which is a valid character). Below are example MAC addresses.
