Setting Notifications for Specific Teams Channels
In addition to the
main notification settings, Teams has features to control notifications from
individual Channels. This can be helpful to highlight new posts from specific
channels or to mute those that are less important. Below are a few ways this can
be done.
Channel
Notifications
To find these
settings, navigate to the desired channel and find the More Options (…) menu.
Select Channel Notifications from the menu.
![]()
There are two main
options on the page that opens.
-
All new posts affects notifications whenever a post is made.
-
Channel mentions affects notifications when someone mentions the channel by placing an @ before the channel name. This is done to call extra attention to a specific post and increase the likelihood of it being seen.
There are three
options for each setting.
-
Banner and feed will show a small pop-up window when there is new activity as well as placing an unread summary line in your Activity feed (the bell icon on the left side).
-
Only show in feed will not show the pop-up window but will place an item in the Activity feed.
-
Off will mute notification option from this channel. This will result in no activity when the selected option would normally send a notification.
Note that if Teams
is closed when activity occurs, if notifications are turned off, they will not
appear in a summary email. If notifications are turned on, they should appear
in the summary email.

Hide a Channel
To completely mute a
channel that is used infrequently, without leaving the team the channel can
also be hidden. Please note this cannot be done with a Team's General channel.
To hide a channel,
first navigate to it and locate the More Options (…) menu. Select Hide from the
list.
![]()
The channel is still
available on the team, it will simply appear in the Hidden Channels section of
the Channels list. This list may need to be expanded by clicking the triangle
next to the words "Hidden channels." Channel notification options are
no longer available now that the channel is hidden.

Leaving a Team
If an entire Team is
no longer relevant or if you were added by mistake, you may simply leave the
Team. To do this, navigate to the Team's More Options (…) menu. Select Leave
team.
![]()
A confirmation
window will appear. Select Yes to continue leaving the team.
![]()
The team will be
removed from your list. To re-join, please contact the Team's owner to be
re-added.
